Endodontics (root canal)
This is the field of dentistry that focuses on the nerve of the tooth .Sometimes damage to the nerve is reversible, but when it is not, root canal therapy may be the best treatment. This treatment is required when the pulp, which is a network of tissue fibers containing veins and nerves, becomes infected or inflamed. Bacteria, which is the most common cause of infection and inflammation, enters the pulp of the tooth through decay or a crack. However, other factors may contribute, such as repeated dental procedures, or a blow or traumatic injury to the face.
Treatment is done comfortably once the tooth has been properly anesthetized with local anesthetic. The nerve is removed from the tooth, sterilized and filled with a rubberized filling material that will prevent further infection.
